A city with three thousand years’ history can be called an ancient city and a courtyard with three hundred years’ can be called an old-line one. Historical Yunjincheng is combined by sixteen elegant and unique courtyards.
Every courtyard is full of folk propitious and auspicious atmosphere, which reflects people’s longing for nice life.The former of the south courtyard of Yunjincheng was Yuantaichang Cloth Shop invested by Qiao Family.
Because of drought in 1877 in Shanxi, the number of victims of the calamity increased and many shops went bankrupt. While Qiao Family managed cloth and gradually enlarged its business to tobacco and hockshop, at last its branches expanded into over ten commercial cities in this country.
After more than thirty years’ hard work, Qiao Huaijin and Qiao Huaijie set up Yuantaichang cloth shop in 1907, which became the outstanding and unique one.
The luxurious guest room is from the old house of the rich and powerful family in Ming and Qing Dynasty.In the grand hall hangs the plaque with “Worldwide Business”.It is elegant and silent in the courtyard while prosperous and noisy out of it.The exquisite windows and skilled colored drawing vividly put the auspicious and philosophic culture up.
We can see many carvings made of wood, stone and brick here, which implicated rich and colorful cultural connotation. And the splendiferous classified furniture gives us a picture of luxury and grandness.
The coordinate two courtyards were both of tens of meters long combined by four yards. There is a wood carving at the top of the door in the middle yard. All the houses are equipped with double layers of door and window. A screen door was especially equipped apart from the main doors.The screen door will be open only to welcome the important visitors. In the mentioned wood carving there are “origin of happiness”, “prosperity and peace” , which means longing for peace, good luck and happiness。
The money exchange shops(The bank)in Pingyao are most famous and Yunjincheng is a magnum opus of them.In the prosperous time, there were 22 money exchange shops in Pingyao called as “Pingyao Group”, which brought great profits for people here.
All the guest rooms was titled after names of money exchange shops with the detailed information of them. And the ornaments in them are relevant to the money exchange shop. The classified atmosphere will give you the feeling of “small world but large heaven”.
Five wooden seats join the one yard from another, in front of which are eaves of a veranda with two couplets of “Tortoise will bless you in the difficult trade war and people from Pingyao will win through all the difficulties” and “Skilled management changes river into sea and masterly exchange makes great profit”.
The couplets inflect the prosperity of money exchange shop in Shanxi.The identity and verve are appropriately imaged by the contents of “rise of the sun” and “eternity of the moon”.Scenery and culture can be seen everywhere.The huge well cover with the type of copper cash also bring the culture connotation of Shanxi merchants. We can see the prosperity of worldwide business at old times.
The pictures in the well cover are of the copper cashes’ type in the ages of Shunzhi, Daoguang, Kangxi and Qianlong, which show us the historical and huge changes and full-bodied countryside atmosphere.
The wing room are at the top of single ramp, whose ridge is covered with a wall. The external wall reaches about seven or eight meters high.
The courtyards give us a strong feeling of domain, at the same time, it seems the sky and the land are jointed into one. When people enjoyed the songs from nightingale and swallow in the breeze and drizzle, they will be absolutely relaxed and affectionate.
Swag door linked one yard from another together with high wall so the layout of the yard can be described as “close from the outside and open and capacious from the inside”. There is a specific middle axes in the symmetrical yard.
The room impression of “deep courtyard” can be found by the four halls of yard. The courtyard has high wall and long hall, which appears to be grand, massy and splendid.
Yunjincheng Hotel becomes unique because of the grand combination yards, fine internal furnishing and profound culture connotation.
